Dussehra is an auspicious hindu festival, celebrated with great enthusiasm and sanctity all over the country. As India is a country with diverse cultures and traditions, among all Dussehra has prominent place in all cultures. In some regions it is called Dussehra whereas at some it is celebrated as Vijaydashmi. It also marks the beginning of preparation for Diwali, which occurs 20 days.

Dussehra name is derived from the Sanskrit word dasha(ten) hara(defeat). It memorializes the victory of lord Rama over the ten headed demon king Ravana. On this day, towering effigies of Ravan, symbolising evil, are burnt with fireworks, marking evil’s destruction.
Vijaydashmi
Vijaydashmi as it’s name suggests it’s a celebration of victory in the final tenth day after nine days (Navaratri) of long battle of Goddess Durga with the demon Mahishasura. Vijayadashami celebrations include processions carrying clay statues of Durga along with music and chants, followed by immersion in nearby river, pound or ocean.
Whether Dussehra or Vijaydashmi the name may differ but this festival symbolises and give a message of victory of ‘Good over Evil’.
Significance of dussehra is still relevant in present times, as no matter how inhuman and untruthful this world would be, we should not overlook our own demons(frailties) for it’s sake. As in the end humanity and truth wins inevitably. Dussehra gives enlightenment to people that they should take example from it to eliminate the demons in them, which otherwise keep growing inside.
If you want to live in a society or the world which is free from malice or bitterness, the secret to achieve it starts with yourself. Better life starts when you becomes conscious of your thoughts and decide to change them from negative to positive. As you all knows very well ‘Mindset is Everything’.
